# Minimalist Resume Templates: The Measurable Spec

Every minimalist resume template looks the same in the preview: white page, thin rules, a lot of air. None of them say what the word means. So it gets attached to two-column layouts with a coloured sidebar and three fonts, and nobody can prove otherwise.

Define it as a measurement and the argument ends.

**Direct Answer:** A minimalist resume template is one that holds to four constraints: **one column, one typeface, two type sizes, two pages**. Each one is checkable in ten seconds on any file you download. [ResuFit](https://app.resufit.com/signup) rebuilds your resume inside those constraints for a specific posting.

**What you'll take away:**

- The four measurements behind **one column, one typeface, two type sizes, two pages**
- Why US federal applications cap resumes at **two pages** from **27 September 2025**
- What breaks when a "clean" template builds its layout out of tables
- Which header fields belong in the UK, the US, Germany, France, Spain and Portugal
- A ten-second check you can run on any template before you use it

## What makes a resume template minimalist?

Four constraints, each of which a public authority has published in some form.

**One column.** [UC Berkeley Career Engagement](https://career.berkeley.edu/prepare-for-success/resumes) (2025) tells candidates to "avoid using headers, footers, text boxes, tables, colors, pictures, or graphics" when a resume has to pass through an applicant tracking system. A second column is built from a table or a text box in almost every template on sale.

**One typeface.** The [U.S. Office of Personnel Management](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/hiring-information/merit-hiring-plan-resources/agency-guidance-on-the-two-page-limit-on-resume-length) (2025) recommends a sans-serif face for federal resumes and names **Lato, Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, Verdana, Open Sans, Source Sans Pro, Roboto and Noto Sans** as the widely available options. Pick one, use it everywhere.

**Two type sizes.** The same OPM guidance says to make page margins **0.5 inches** and to consider **14-point for titles and 10-point for the main text**. Two sizes carry the entire hierarchy of the document, which is why a third size and a second colour add nothing a reader can use.

**Two pages, as a ceiling.** One page is fine, three is not. For US federal roles applied to through USAJOBS the limit is enforced at upload, which is where the recipe stops being advice.

## Where does the two-page limit come from?

The [USAJOBS Help Center](https://help.usajobs.gov/faq/application/documents/resume/what-to-include) (2025) puts it plainly: "Federal agencies only accept resumes up to two pages in length to comply with the Merit Hiring Plan. USAJOBS will not allow you to upload or build resumes longer than two pages." The [U.S. Office of Personnel Management](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/hiring-information/merit-hiring-plan-resources/agency-guidance-on-the-two-page-limit-on-resume-length) (2025) dates the restriction to **27 September 2025** and applies it to uploaded, builder-created and searchable resumes alike. USAJOBS refuses a third page at the upload step; agencies handling applications outside that platform apply their own process.

Three other public bodies landed on the same ceiling without any coordination:

- Spain's [SEPE](https://sepe.es/SiteSepe/contenidos/personas/encontrar_empleo/encontrar_empleo_europa/paises/espana/pdf_espana/CV_Carta_Presentaci-n_Espa-a_2020.pdf) (2020) publishes **white DIN-A4 with 2.5 cm margins** and advises that the CV should not exceed **two pages**
- Germany's [Bundesagentur für Arbeit](https://www.arbeitsagentur.de/vor-ort/datei/praktische-bewerbungstipps_ba141790.pdf) (2022) asks for a **tabellarisch** CV, clearly structured, **two pages at best**
- [EURES](https://eures.europa.eu/living-and-working/living-and-working-conditions-europe/living-and-working-conditions-portugal_pt) (2025) describes the Portuguese CV as **1 to 2 pages** in reverse chronological order, with the biggest achievements in the **top half of page one**

Four countries, one geometry. That is the whole case for **one column, one typeface, two type sizes, two pages** as a definition rather than a taste.

## Why does one column matter more than the colour palette?

Because the column count decides whether your text arrives in the right order.

Applicant tracking systems read a document as a stream. A two-column layout has to be flattened into that stream, and the parser decides the order in which it comes out. [UC Berkeley Career Engagement](https://career.berkeley.edu/prepare-for-success/resumes) (2025) recommends a simple format with **10 to 11 point** body text and margins of **0.5 inch to one inch**, and reserves bold, italics and underlining for emphasis. How much a given system loses varies, which is the reason to test rather than assume.

> **Pro tip:** Save your resume as plain text and reopen it. Sections returning in the order you wrote them is a good first signal. It checks one extraction path, so treat it as a smoke test rather than proof that a given system will parse the file. Our guide to [plain text resumes](https://resufit.com/blog/plain-text-resumes-a-complete-guide-for-ats-success-in-the-modern-job-market/) covers the full check.

Colour, by contrast, decides very little. A navy heading and a black heading parse the same way. The visual restraint is worth having for a human reader, and it earns none of the safety that the column count does.

## What goes in a minimalist header, and what stays out?

Here is where a single global answer stops working. The [National Careers Service](https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/careers-advice/cv-sections) (2025) sets the UK convention: sections for contact details, an introduction, education history, work history and references, most recent first, and "You should not include your age, your date of birth, whether you're married or your nationality."

Move one border and the header changes. The geometry does not.

| Market | What the public guidance says about the header | Published length |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **UK** | Leave out age, date of birth, marital status and nationality ([National Careers Service](https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/careers-advice/cv-sections), 2025) | Not specified |
| **US (federal)** | Contact details in the body of the document; PDF preserves formatting and page count ([USAJOBS](https://help.usajobs.gov/faq/application/documents/resume/what-to-include), 2025) | Two pages, enforced from 27 September 2025 |
| **Germany** | A photo is no longer required and stays customary in many industries ([Bundesagentur für Arbeit](https://www.arbeitsagentur.de/bildung/bewerbung/bewerbungsunterlagen), 2025) | Two pages at best |
| **France** | Physical appearance is one of the 25-plus protected discrimination criteria, so the photo is a legal decision ([Défenseur des droits](https://www.defenseurdesdroits.fr/comment-savoir-si-je-suis-victime-de-discrimination-141), 2025) | Not specified |
| **Spain** | Personal data first, then academic training, work experience and skills ([Red COE / SEPE](https://coeceuta.sepe.es/coe-ceuta/servicios/recursos/2025/como-crear-tu-curriculum.html), 2025) | Two pages maximum |
| **Portugal** | A photo is often valued ([EURES](https://eures.europa.eu/living-and-working/living-and-working-conditions-europe/living-and-working-conditions-portugal_pt), 2025) | 1 to 2 pages |

One minimalist document, five header variants. If you apply across borders, you edit the top eight lines and leave the rest of the file alone.

## How do you check a template in ten seconds?

Open it and count. Six checks stand between a download and **one column, one typeface, two type sizes, two pages**, and a template that fails any of the first four is a decorated document with a clean colour scheme.

| Check | Passes | Fails |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Columns** | One, full width | A sidebar, or any second column |
| **Typefaces** | One | A display face for headings plus a body face |
| **Type sizes** | Two, roughly 14pt and 10pt | Four or more, plus small caps |
| **Pages** | Two or fewer | Three, or "expandable" |
| **Margins** | 0.5 inch to one inch on all sides | Text running to the paper edge |
| **Objects** | Plain headings and bullets | Tables, text boxes, icons, charts, skill rating bars |

That last row is where most "clean" templates fail. A skills section drawn as a row of progress bars is a table with a picture in it, and it carries no information a reader could act on.

Once the geometry is right, the remaining work is wording. A template gives you a layout. **ResuFit rewrites your resume in the language of the posting**, which is what decides whether the two pages you are allowed say anything worth reading. Start with the [resume analyzer](https://app.resufit.com/signup) if you want to see what a parser makes of your current file.

## Does a minimalist resume work in creative and technical fields?

The document that gets parsed and the portfolio that gets admired are two different files. Keep one at **one column, one typeface, two type sizes, two pages**, and put a single portfolio URL in the contact block.

- **Design and art roles.** The work does the persuading. Our [InDesign resume guide](https://resufit.com/blog/elevate-your-job-application-professional-resume-templates-in-indesign/) covers the case where a designed document is expected, and what it costs you in parsing.
- **Academic and technical roles.** Typesetting buys consistent spacing without adding decoration. Our [LaTeX CV guide](https://resufit.com/blog/mastering-latex-cv-templates-a-comprehensive-guide-for-academic-and-technical-professionals/) walks through the templates worth starting from.
- **Career changers.** The constraint that hurts is the page count, because a pivot needs explaining. Our [functional resume guide](https://resufit.com/blog/functional-resume-templates-in-word-a-complete-guide-for-skill-focused-job-seekers/) shows how to lead with skills while keeping the dates visible.

## The short version

"Minimalist" stops being a mood the moment you give it numbers. **One column, one typeface, two type sizes, two pages**: hold any template up against those four and you have your answer in ten seconds. The US federal government enforces the page half, and Spain, Germany and the EU's Portugal guidance arrive at the same ceiling from three other directions. Edit the header for the market you are applying in, and leave the geometry alone.

If the deadline is hours away rather than days, a [quick resume built around simple steps](https://resufit.com/blog/create-a-quick-and-easy-resume-simple-steps-for-job-seekers-in-a-hurry/) skips the debate over tools and gets a usable draft out the door.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is a minimalist resume template?

A template that holds to four measurable constraints: one column, one typeface, two type sizes, two pages. Every constraint is checkable on any file you download, which is what separates the definition from a mood board. The [U.S. Office of Personnel Management](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/hiring-information/merit-hiring-plan-resources/agency-guidance-on-the-two-page-limit-on-resume-length) (2025) recommends the typography half of that recipe for federal applications: a sans-serif face, 14-point titles over 10-point body text, 0.5-inch margins. These are formatting recommendations, not eligibility rules.

### How long should a minimalist resume be?

Two pages is the ceiling four public bodies converge on. The [USAJOBS Help Center](https://help.usajobs.gov/faq/application/documents/resume/what-to-include) (2025) enforces it as a hard rule for US federal applications, Spain's [SEPE](https://sepe.es/SiteSepe/contenidos/personas/encontrar_empleo/encontrar_empleo_europa/paises/espana/pdf_espana/CV_Carta_Presentaci-n_Espa-a_2020.pdf) (2020) advises not exceeding two pages, Germany's [Bundesagentur für Arbeit](https://www.arbeitsagentur.de/vor-ort/datei/praktische-bewerbungstipps_ba141790.pdf) (2022) says two pages at best, and [EURES](https://eures.europa.eu/living-and-working/living-and-working-conditions-europe/living-and-working-conditions-portugal_pt) (2025) gives 1 to 2 pages for Portugal.

### Which font should a minimalist resume use?

One sans-serif face, used everywhere. The [U.S. Office of Personnel Management](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/hiring-information/merit-hiring-plan-resources/agency-guidance-on-the-two-page-limit-on-resume-length) (2025) recommends Lato for federal resumes and names Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, Verdana, Open Sans, Source Sans Pro, Roboto and Noto Sans as the other widely available options, suggesting 14-point for titles and 10-point for the main text. Two sizes carry the whole hierarchy, so a third font does no work.

### Are two-column resume templates ATS-safe?

They carry real risk, because a second column is almost always built from a table or a text box. [UC Berkeley Career Engagement](https://career.berkeley.edu/prepare-for-success/resumes) (2025) advises avoiding headers, footers, text boxes, tables, colors, pictures and graphics for that reason. Parsing behaviour varies by system, so test a parsed copy rather than assume.

### Should a minimalist resume include a photo?

It depends on the market, and the geometry stays the same either way. The UK's [National Careers Service](https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/careers-advice/cv-sections) (2025) says to leave out age, date of birth, marital status and nationality. Germany's [Bundesagentur für Arbeit](https://www.arbeitsagentur.de/bildung/bewerbung/bewerbungsunterlagen) (2025) notes a photo is no longer required and stays customary in many industries. [EURES](https://eures.europa.eu/living-and-working/living-and-working-conditions-europe/living-and-working-conditions-portugal_pt) (2025) says a photo is often valued in Portugal. In France, physical appearance is one of the 25-plus discrimination criteria listed by the [Défenseur des droits](https://www.defenseurdesdroits.fr/comment-savoir-si-je-suis-victime-de-discrimination-141) (2025), which makes the photo a legal question.

### What margins should a minimalist resume use?

Half an inch is the published federal figure. The [U.S. Office of Personnel Management](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/hiring-information/merit-hiring-plan-resources/agency-guidance-on-the-two-page-limit-on-resume-length) (2025) recommends 0.5-inch margins on a standard 8.5 by 11 inch page, while [UC Berkeley Career Engagement](https://career.berkeley.edu/prepare-for-success/resumes) (2025) gives a range of 0.5 inch to one inch. Spain's [SEPE](https://sepe.es/SiteSepe/contenidos/personas/encontrar_empleo/encontrar_empleo_europa/paises/espana/pdf_espana/CV_Carta_Presentaci-n_Espa-a_2020.pdf) (2020) publishes 2.5 cm on white A4.
